It may be the start of spring but it certainly hasn’t felt like it! We’ve had a record number of days of rain and I’m really hoping that today’s sunshine will stick around. Needless to stay, I’ve been sticking to my “winter reds” and here are a few new ones that I’ve really been enjoying.
Bordeaux is one of my favourite wines to drink in the winter, and at under $40, this wine is a steal for a special occasion sipper. We had this with grilled chicken and roast veggies and it was a perfect Friday night in. It’s flavour profile is soft tannins with juicy red fruit.
Proteas happen to be one of my favourite flowers (see one of our shoots here filled with them!) so I was really excited by this bottle. I also have a bottle of Chenin Blanc waiting for me to drink at home. I love a good cab so I was excited to try this one from South Africa for under $15 (to compare, an average California cab is $30+). Typical to South African reds, there were notes of tobacco, slight spice and intense flavour.
Is there anything better than red wine by a fire in the winter? This Malbec is a great price, easy to drink and has some surprising floral notes. We enjoyed it with grilled steak and baked yam fries and it was such a night complement. Even better? The slight vanilla tones made a lovely dessert 😉
